What is produced, who owns it, and how we organize production and reproduction are core questions of Marxist political economics. At the same time, these questions reveal much about major issues of our time, the ecological crisis and increasing international inequality.
In their new book "Marx’s Theory of Value at the Frontiers" Güney Işıkara and Patrick Mokre guide readers through Marxist theory of value and argue that it is precisely at its frontiers, in its irregularities, where explosive conflicts and instabilities loom. In historical Marxism and current debates, the production of profits from exploitation guides the social division of labor, decides in which sectors capital and labor is employed and which are deserted. For unequal exchange, this means ever-increasing international inequalities through value transfers. For ground and fossil rents, this means extra profits that accelerate the capitalized ecological crisis.
On January 13th, Güney Işıkara and Patrick Mokre will discuss why the theory of value matters for our understanding of capitalism with renowned political economist and feminist Marxist Gabriele Michalitsch. The event is aimed at a general audience, including but not restricted to activists, researchers, students and all interested in political economics. The event will take place at FAKTORY (Universitätsstraße 9, 1010 Vienna) and will be held in English, followed by drinks and snacks.
