JUST Friends: How Do We Want to Live?

When envisioning transformational change, it's essential to recognize that the way we live together will also evolve. How we interact with one another, live, and care for each other is deeply rooted in our society—and shaped by political and economic structures as well as power relations. This interactive discussion explores how housing and communal living can foster caring relationships beyond the nuclear family.

Together, we will explore two guiding questions:

• Which housing forms promote committed and caring relationships beyond the nuclear family?
• And how does the physical form of housing shape our relations - and how can we think beyond the home/living space when it comes to caring relations, toward more public and shared spaces?

What to expect:

Opening reading:
The session opens with a reading by Nora Krenmayr interwoven with short interventions from Christina Purrer and Sarah Ware, setting the stage for deeper discussion.

Fishbowl discussion:
Participants then take part in a fishbowl discussion, sharing insights, identifying key issues, and posing new questions.

The event is open to everyone interested. Bring your friends and (chosen) family.

• Nora Krenmayr is a researcher at the Institute of Social Ecology, BOKU University, with a focus on environmental labour studies.
  
  
• Christina Purrer lives in a shared house with six other people and researches the intersection of communal living, care, and new family models. She volunteers with the initiative Gemeinsam Bauen & Wohnen and has first-hand insigh into more than 25 housing projects across Austria – with more to come.
  
  
• Sarah Ware is an urban planning practitioner and researcher at the Central European University of Vienna focusing on social-ecological housing and civil society participation with an interest in Feminist Degrowth approaches to urban planning.
